Isolation and characterization of antineoplastic alkaloids from Catharanthus roseus L. Don. cultivated in Egypt.
Vinblastine and vincristine (the antileukemic agents) were isolated, in a pure form, from Catharanthus roseus L. Don., cultivated in Egypt, by several chromatographic techniques. Five modified methods for the preparation of total alkaloids were carried out. All the isolated mixtures were evaluated by HPLC and HPTLC analyses. The antineoplastic alkaloids; vinblastine and vincristine, were isolat...
متن کاملIndole alkaloids from Catharanthus roseus: bioproduction and their effect on human health.
Catharanthus roseus is a medicinal plant belonging to the family Apocynaceae which produces terpenoid indole alkaloids (TIAs) of high medicinal importance. Indeed, a number of activities like antidiabetic, bactericide and antihypertensive are linked to C. roseus. Nevertheless, the high added value of this plant is based on its enormous pharmaceutical interest, producing more than 130 TIAs, some...
متن کاملCrystal structure of akuammicine, an indole alkaloid from Catharanthus roseus
The title compound, C20H22N2O2, an alkaloid isolated from the Madagascar periwinkle, crystallizes in P1 with two independent but closely similar mol-ecules in the unit cell. The mol-ecules are linked into pairs by two N-H⋯O=C hydrogen bonds. The absolute configuration was confirmed by anomalous dispersion effects as S at the 3 and 15 positions, and R at the 7 position.
متن کاملThe bHLH transcription factor BIS1 controls the iridoid branch of the monoterpenoid indole alkaloid pathway in Catharanthus roseus.
Plants make specialized bioactive metabolites to defend themselves against attackers. The conserved control mechanisms are based on transcriptional activation of the respective plant species-specific biosynthetic pathways by the phytohormone jasmonate. Knowledge of the transcription factors involved, particularly in terpenoid biosynthesis, remains fragmentary. By transcriptome analysis and func...
متن کاملMedium-Induced Formation of Indole Alkaloids and Concomitant Changes of Interrelated Enzyme Activities in Cell Suspension Cultures of Catharanthus roseus
Recently medium conditions have been developed which stimulate the formation of the indole alkaloid ajmalicine in cell suspension cultures of Catharanthus roseus [6]. When cells were subjected to these conditions the alkaloid accumulation was preceded by a 12-fold increase of the specific activity of tryptophan decarboxylase. The enzyme activity showed a maximum two days after the cell transfer...
